For the Mature Drinker
“Drinking Like a Man” is a testosterone-driven style of boozin’ that’s as old as water, usually equated with pounding mass quantities of hard liquor, sans chasers. (Hmm, sounds like Friday night.) But back in the day, drinking (even ‘like a man’) was a much classier affair. Both guys and girls took their time sipping on expertly-mixed drinks that had actual names, as opposed to a and soda. There’s no doubt your granddaddy remembers those days of yore fondly, although lately he’s foregone the fancy old timey drinks and resigned himself to straight scotch on the rocks. Let’s be honest, at his age, he doesn’t have time to fuck around.Yep, no one hits the sauce quite like gramps, and if we know anything, we know it’s wise to listen to our elders. After 70 years, old farts have certainly learned a thing or two. And maybe you’ve picked up his drinking habits too, but aren’t quite ready to knock back multiple glasses of Johnnie Red, neat. After all, you’ve got a couple decades to make it to that level. (As long as your liver holds up.)
Here’s some old man drinks from the good old days that will definitely put some grey hairs on any boyish chest. Cheers Daddy-o!
Old-Fashioned
2 oz blended whiskey
1 sugar cube
1 dash bitters
1 slice lemon
1 cherry
1 slice orange
The name pretty much sums up this one since most bartenders need to dig out their bar book to make it. (Except the good ones, of course.) Combine the sugar cube, bitters, and 1 tsp. water in an old-fashioned glass. Muddle well, add blended whiskey, and stir. Add a twist of lemon peel and ice cubes. Add slices of orange and lemon and top with the cherry. Serve with a swizzle stick. (Hello retro!)
Pegu
1 1/2 oz gin
1/2 oz Cointreau® orange liqueur
1/2 oz lime juice
2 dashes Angostura® bitters
Named after the legendary Burmese Pegu Club (1920s here people) written about by Rudyard Kipling, the Pegu is a classic sweet and sour mixture as potent as moonshine. Stir with cracked ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime twist. Drink up there, sonny!
Bob Dandy
2 pt Bourbon (Wild Turkey full proof)
1 pt Lillet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura® bitters
This classic cocktail is a straight shooter (just like your pops). A very close cousin to the Manhattan, this simple elixir goes straight to the brain. Stir together ingredients and serve in a cocktail or rocks glass. Decorate with a maraschino cherry or a lime wedge. Have more than one and you may feel a little "Rob Rocked."
